Term Definition
Gate In injection and transfer moulding, the orifice through which the melt enters the cavity. Sometimes the gate has the same cross-section as the runner leading to it; often, it is severely restricted.
Gating Strategy The approach you use to choose the number and location of gates in a mould.
Gel In polyethylene, a small amorphous resin particle which differs from its surroundings by being of higher molecular weight and/or crosslinked, so that its processing characteristics differ from the surrounding resin to such a degree that it is not easily dispersed in the surrounding resin. A gel is readily discernible in thin films.
Gel Coat (1) Resin layer (usually coloured) that protects the underlying resin/glass fibre laminate from external influences such as impact, UV light, chemicals, etc.; the side of the moulded part that remains most visible or external after demoulding, hence the gel coat is the first layer applied to the mould (2) A thin, outer layer of resin, sometimes containing pigment, applied to a reinforced plastics molding as a cosmetic.
Gel Point The stage at which a liquid material to form a gel under specified conditions of temperature as measured by a specific test.
Gel Time The time required for a liquid material to form a gel under specified conditions of temperature as measured by a specific test.
Glass Thread A type of threading in which the thread side gradually taper down to the neck finish. Cross section of threads are semi-circular.
Glass Transition Temperature (Tg) (1) The approximate midpoint of the temperature range over which the glass transition takes place.(2) Amorphous regions of a thermoplastic soften at this temperature
Glitter (or Flitter or Spangles) A group of special decorative materials consisting of flakes large enough so that each separate flake produces a plainly visible sparkle or reflection. They are incorporated directly into the plastic during compounding.
Gloss The shine or lustre of the surface of a material.
GP General purpose
Graduated Moulded in scale to indicate content level in container.
Graft Copolymers A chain of one type of polymer to which side chains of a different type are attached or grafted (eg. Polymerizing butadiene and styrene monomer at the same time).
Granular Structure Non-uniform appearance of finished plastic material due to retention of, or incomplete fusion of, particles of composition, either within the mass or on the surface.
Granulate Plastic starting material for primary processing; particles are usually in the form of lentil-shaped cylinders
Gravure Printing Depositing ink on plastic film or sheeting or product from depressions of a specific depth, pattern and spacing, which have been either mechanically or chemically engraved into a printing cylinder.
Grit Blasted A surface treatment of a mould in which steel grit or sand materials are blown to the walls of the cavity to produce a roughened surface. Air escape from mould is improved and special appearance of moulded article is often obtained by this method.
Grooved Liner (Or Barrel) A liner whose bore is provided with longitudinal grooves, usually for several diameters in the feed section only.
Guide Pins Devices that maintain proper alignment of force plug and cavity as mould closes.
Gusset A tuck placed in each side of tube of blown tubing as produced to provide a convenient square or rectangular package, similar to that of the familiar brown paperbag or sack, in subsequent packaging.
