Definition |
L Dimension
The vertical distance from the sealing surface to the top part of neck bead, i.e., where the uppermost part of the bead intersects the container neck.
L Style Thread
A type of thread contour (cross-section) roughly trapezoidal in outline. The outermost part is radiussed a "general purpose" thread contour designed for use with metal or plastic closures.
L/D Ratio
A term used to define an extrusion screw which denotes the ratio of the screw length to the screw diameter.
L/D Ratio (Screw)
The ratio of the working flighted length of the screw (distance from the front edge of the feed opening to the forward end of the screw flight when the screw is in the forward position) to Its outside diameter. In practice, the ratio calculation is simplified to dividing the flighted length of the screw by its nominal diameter.
Label Panel
The plain portion of a decorated container set up for application of labels.
Lacquer
Solution of natural or synthetic resins, etc, in readily evaporating solvents, which is used as a protective coating.
Laminar Flow
Laminar flow of thermoplastic resins in a mould is accompanied by solidification of the layer in contact with the mould surface that acts as an insulating tube through which material flows to fill the remainder of the cavity. This type of flow is essential to duplication of the mould surface.
Laminate
(1) A product made by bonding together two or more layers of material or materials. (2) The cured thermoset matrix or the cooled reinforced-reinforced composite (with a thermoplastic matrix)
Laminated Plastics (Synthetic Resin-Bonded Laminate)
A plastics material consisting of superimposed layers of a synthetic resin-impregnated or coated filler which have been bonded together, usually by means of heat and pressure, to form a single piece.
Laminated Wood
A high-pressure bonded wood product composed of layers of wood with resin as the laminating agent. The term plywood covers a form of laminated wood in which successive layers of veneer are ordinarily cross laminated, the core of which may be veneer or sawn lumber in one piece or several pieces.
Land
(1) The horizontal bearing surface of a semipositive or flash mould by which excess material escapes. See cut-off. (2) The bearing surface along the top of the flights of a screw in a screw extruder. (3) The surface of an extrusion die parallel to the direction of melt flow.
Lattice Pattern
In reinforced plastics, a pattern of filament winding with a fixed arrangement of open voids.
Layered Structure
Structure and arrangement of the individual layers (laminate) of a reinforced-reinforced composite
Lay-Up
As used in reinforced plastics, the reinforcing material placed in position in the mould; also the resin-impregnated reinforcement. The process of placing the reinforcing material in position in the mould.
LCP
Liquid crystal polymer
LDPE
Low density polyethylene
Leach
To extract a soluble component from a mixture by the process of percolation.
Lead (Screw)
The distance measured parallel to the screw axis from one edge of the top of a screw flight to the same edge of the same flight after one complete turn. It is not the distance measured to the next screw flight in a multi-flighted screw. (For this see PITCH)
Leaker
Any condition of the finish where the normal sealing device or closure will not retain the air or liquid content of the bottle.
Light Resistance
The ability of a plastic material to withstand exposure to light, usually sunlight or the ultraviolet part of the light spectrum, without change of color or loss of physical and/or chemical properties.
