Circuit
In filament winding, the winding produced by a single revolution of mandrel or form.
Clamping Force
The force or pressure applied by the machine's clamping unit to the mould during the filling, packing and holding phases of the moulding cycle. Clamping force is described in terms of pressure acting on the mould's projected surface. The units are usually tons / in^2 or kN / m^2.
Clamping Plate
A plate fitted to a mould and used to fasten the mould to a moulding machine.
Clamping Pressure
In injection moulding and in transfer moulding, the pressure which is applied to the mould to keep it closed, in opposition to the fluid pressure of the compressed moulding material.
Clarifier
An additive that increases the transparency of a material
Clarity
Freedom of haze or cloudiness in a plastic material.
Clearance
A controlled distance by which one part of an object is kept separated from another part.
Clearance (Screw/Barrel)
The difference in the diameters of the screw and the bore (diametral clearance) or, more commonly, one-half the diametral clearance, referred to as radial clearance.
Closure
A devise used to seal off the opening of the bottle to prevent the loss of its contents.
CMC
Carboxymethyl cellulose
CN
Cellulose nitrate
CNC
Computer controlled machining
Coalesce
To combine into one body or to grow together
Coating
See specific type of coating such as Curtain, Extrusion, Kissroll spray.
Coating Weight
The weight of coating per unit area. In the United States usually per ream eg 500 sheets 24 x 36 (3000 sq.ft.) but sometimes 1000 sq.ft.
Coefficient of Expansion
The fractional change in length (sometimes volume, specified) of a material for a unit change in temperature. Values for plastics range from 0.01 to 0.2 mils/in., Deg C
Coefficient of Friction
See 'Friction Coefficient'
Coefficient of Thermal Expansion
The fractional change in dimension (sometimes volume) specified of a material (plastic, metal or other materials) per a unit change in temperature.
Co-extrusion
The process of combining two or more layers of extrudate to produce a multiple layer product in a single step.
Cold Flow
See 'Creep'
