Industry News... Tangaroa Blue Foundation (rig Recycling)
About Rig Recycle
Rig Recycle is an Australian-first program that aims to divert recreational fishing gear from landfill. It was developed in 2021 by not-for-profit organisation Tangaroa Blue Foundation and has now been implemented in communities across QLD, NSW and Victoria.
This program collects selected recreational fishing and packaging items and diverts them from landfill through an innovative repair, reuse and recycle framework.
Rig Recycle program has now started to expand into the Tennis industry, recently partnering with Tennis Australia at the Australian Open where used tennis strings were collected to be processed through the Rig Recycle network.
About Tangaroa Blue Foundation
Tangaroa Blue Foundation is an Australian registered charity focused on the health of our marine environment, and coordinates the Australian Marine Debris Initiative (AMDI), an
on-ground network of volunteers, communities, organisations and agencies around the country monitoring the impacts of marine debris along their stretch of coastline. Since the
program started in 2004, 24 million pieces of marine debris have been removed from the Australian coastline and data on this debris collated and inputted into the (AMDI) Database.
Processing Facility for Marine Plastics
Sustainability Victoria investing in recycling for the recreational fishing industry has also led to Victoria having a dedicated processing facility for recycling marine plastics through the Rig Recycle program. A big thanks to our engineering partners at Telford Smith Engineering for working with us to identify the best systems for our program.
Telford Smith’s Support for the String Cycle Initiative
At Telford Smith, we wholeheartedly endorse the 'String Cycle' initiative by the Tangaroa Blue Foundation. This groundbreaking program, designed to recycle tennis racquet strings in partnership with the Australian Open, perfectly aligns with our dedication to sustainable practices and environmental responsibility.
As their engineering collaborator, we are thrilled to offer our support to this innovative project. We recognise the unique challenges and opportunities involved in recycling specialised materials like tennis racquet strings. Our team is fully committed to leveraging our expertise and resources to develop the necessary machinery and equipment, ensuring the success of the 'String Cycle' initiative.
We commend Tangaroa Blue for leading such a crucial environmental endeavour, and we are honoured to stand beside them in this mission. Together, we can make a substantial impact in reducing waste and promoting recycling not only within the sports community but also in broader society.
