According to Jonathan Leake, CEO of Sustainability Victoria, the e-waste generation in Australia is increasing three times faster than the general municipal waste in Australia. “Australians are among the largest producers of e-waste in the world, and therefore, the country’s electronic waste production might increase to 60% by 2023-24”, said Leake.

To cope with such alarming rates and the mass consumption of electronics, it was recently announced that all the Victorian e-waste management laws will be completely reformed on July 1, 2019. According to the law, disposal of e-waste in general landfill will lead to fines and along with that there will be at least one e-waste disposal point within every 20 minutes.

What is E-Waste?

Electronic waste is any electronic product that has surpassed its period of usefulness. It includes:

  • Computers or laptops

  • TV and monitors

  • Cell phones

  • Printers

  • Storage equipment and USB drives

  • Household appliances, fridges or washing machines

Sadly, e-waste recycling is far rarer than it should be, but it’s high time it should come into effect because:

  • Electronics consist of important information and it is important that it gets completely destroyed before it is disposed of.

  • E-waste contain materials such as lead, arsenic, mercury, etc., that can poison the environment. Each of these materials serve an important role during the product’s lifespan but can destroy the ecosystem when disposed of in landfills.

What if You Do Not Recycle E-waste?

The changes in the reform are to be released by July 2019. It is not clearly known how restrictive and rigid these laws are going to be, but it is absolutely clear that disposing of e-waste in a landfill will be extremely risky.

Firstly, because the safety of your data cannot be guaranteed. If not properly recycled or destroyed, the data from your device can be recovered, and that can have serious repercussions. To avoid this and to guarantee complete peace of mind, get your e-waste recycled by certified and reliable recycling machinery from that of Telford Smith.

Recycling is the Future of Australian Waste!

Recycling and destroying your data completely is not just the most logical way but it is also the most environment-friendly approach to proper waste management. For the most sustainable and reliable destruction of your e-waste, Telford Smith has been offering world’s largest range of recycling and processing equipment for 70 years.
